The Meaning Behind “DIVAI”
The name DIVAI carries a story that bridges cultures and languages. In Swahili, “Divai” means “wine” — a word that traces its origin to the French phrase du vin.
Wine, once unknown in that culture, gained a name through sound, memory, and exchange. DIVAI embraces this idea — wine as a universal language, shared across borders and histories.
The Vision of Winemaker Luís Duarte
The creative force behind DIVAI is renowned Portuguese winemaker Luís Duarte. His career began in 1987 at Esporão, where he spent nearly two decades shaping some of Alentejo’s most influential wines.
Over the years, Duarte has contributed to iconic estates including Quinta do Mouro, Malhadinha Nova, Herdade Grande, Dona Maria, and Herdade das Servas. He has been named Winemaker of the Year multiple times, recognized for his ability to balance power, elegance, and authenticity.
