“My son is the youngest vigneron in the whole of the Azores Archipelago.”
— Sandra Lopes Amaral

“It all began some three years ago,” Sandra recalls, “when Lucas was not even nineteen. He was studying to become a vigneron in Mirandela while working at António Maçanita’s estate in the Douro Valley.

For generations, our family harvested grapes to sell to local producers. Covid brought Lucas back to Pico — and with it, the chance to create our own wines.”

Pico Island — A UNESCO World Heritage Vineyard

Pico Island lies nearly 1,000 miles west of mainland Portugal. Its vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, defined by small plots protected by black volcanic stone walls.

These walls shield vines from Atlantic winds and salt spray, allowing them to survive in volcanic soils and extreme maritime conditions.

A New Generation of Azorean Winemaking

At nineteen, Lucas Lopes Amaral became one of Portugal’s youngest winemakers. His wines reflect Pico’s maritime climate and volcanic soils, combining freshness, texture, and precision.
